Sy40 Sweetens up Sugar Land

2005-02-15

SUGAR LAND, TEXAS: When Christ United Methodist Church in Sugar Land, Texas set out two years ago to remodel and expand its facility, and upgrade its audio capabilities in the process, the church had one caveat for its contractors: don't mess with the architecture.

"Acoustically, the room was a tough one," says Bill Schuermann, senior design consultant with HFP Acoustical Consultants, the Houston-based Audio systems designer that won the job of helping solve the church's problem. "our job was to create a livelier space with a sound system covering the balcony seating areas without compromising the architecture." Anticipating a variety of applications and configurations based on the nature of different styles of services, events and productions - ranging from preaching to choir singing to live bands - the church wanted a sound system that was simple enough for church volunteers to use, yet sophisticated enough to handle the demands placed on it.

The solution ended up in a system comprised of some of the most advanced audio components and technology available. From a Level Control Systems (LCS) variable room acoustics (VRAS) system to overcome the room's acoustic failings, to a Meyer M1 Series Powered Loudspeaker line array system, to a Crestron Pro 2 AV control system, HFP designed an elegant solution to overcome the venue's acoustical, audio drawbacks.

Equally as important in the overall audio mix for the project were a highly versatile, new-generation digital live mixing console from the leading console manufacturer INNOVASON combined with high-end microphones from Sennheiser Electronics Corporation's Neumann line.

HFP's decided on using one of INNOVASON's newest generation of mixing consoles - the Compact Sy40 "All-in-One" digital console. Supplemented with an InnovaSON Stage Box that allows for expanded I/O capabilities, the Sy40 was selected for its flexibility, affordability and efficiency of operation in a medium-sized live application environment.

Citing the Sy40's ease of operation and ability to be programmed for easy scene recall, Black says the console considerably reduces the amount of time church staff have to devote to formatting the audio system prior to each use. The console, installed in a balcony booth, is set up to handle both front-of-house and monitor positions.

"With the ability to control each and every parameter as presets, it simplifies the job of the sound person and enables them to do a much better production job," Black says. "Scenes can be stored to memory and the whole system can be configured very quickly by just hitting a recall button. For modern churches with multiple styles of services, like Christ United Methodist Church, this is where the Sy40 really shines."

Schuermann adds that the Sy40's virtual input and output patching capabilities eliminated the need for the church to purchase and find space to accommodate additional outboard patchbays and audio processing components. "With all the virtual processing integral to the console, such as limiting, gate compressing and parametric EQ on every channel, the need for processing is eliminated. If you add up the price of all of the outboard audio processing and patching one would have to purchase to match what's included inside the Sy40 the console basically comes free. On top of that, we didn't have to take out a lot of seats to accommodate additional equipment. You get maximum performance and flexibility with the Sy40 along with a very pristine board."

Schuermann says the audio technology integrated into the remodeled sanctuary supports the church's ability to enter a new era of ministry. "The components selected were based on their desire to have premium quality sound that was visually unobtrusive and provided maximum performance," he says. From start to finish, the Christ United Methodist Church's sound system embodies elegance, harmony, and power.
