Live multitrack recording with INNOVASON and LX6464ES from Digigram 2007-03-25
According to those in the know, the combination of an INNOVASON console and a PC equipped with a Digigram LX6464ES running over an EtherSound network provides a complement of technologies that has the capacity to revolutionise the live sound recording market. LX6464ES is an EtherSound-enabled PCI network sound card. Containing DirectSound and ASIO drivers, the LX6464ES can transmit and receive up to 64 EtherSound channels, thus connecting computer-based audio applications to the EtherSound network. Installed in a PC running suitable audio recording software, the LX6464ES sits on the network between the INNOVASON console and the Dio Core (INNOVASON's dedicated EtherSound-enabled stagebox). The devices are daisy-chained using a single CAT5 network cable capable of transmitting and receiving up to 64 EtherSound channels. "The results are truly astonishing," affirmed INNOVASON's Hervé De Caro. "With the combination of the console, and a simple PC equipped with the LX6464ES, you have a powerful 64-track recorder 'par excellence'. I recorded 48 tracks (40 mics sent directly from the INNOVASON mic preamps and 8 pre-mixes from the desk) with results that had to be heard to be believed. Working over an EtherSound network enables you to achieve the sort of audio quality previously only possible in a high-end studio environment, and the fact that it's bi-directional allows you to take your feeds either direct from the mic pre-amps or as pre-recorded mixes from the desk, mixing and matching as you see fit. It couldn't be simpler. To be honest, working with this set-up finally convinced me of the possibilities of digital recording. Furthermore, INNOVASON has the advantage over its competitors as no other digital console manufacturer currently offers the same level of EtherSound networking possibilities, without which the audio quality would undoubtedly suffer. It should also be noted that the ease of set-up and implementation is also unmatched by any other solution to date." "However, it doesn't just stop at live recording," continued Hervé. "Once your live recording is made you are then free to use it to mix your live album or run your soundcheck without the musicians having to be present, which is a huge time-saver. Concerning the mixing, I did it on the same console I used to make the recording as I wanted to make use of the desk's EtherSound capacity to use my plug-ins as if they were external effects. I have to say, the results were more than satisfactory! In my view, the LX6464ES used in conjunction with an INNOVASON console over an EtherSound network opens up a world of possibilities in the live sound arena that no-one had anticipated. The implications are nothing short of monumental – for those engineers out there with a revolutionary, pioneering streak, these are the tools for you!
